Evonik has successfully completed the expansion project of its MetAMINO® production facility in Singapore ahead of schedule. Following brief shutdowns in the fourth quarter of 2023 and the second quarter of 2024, the Singapore MetAMINO® production site has resumed full operations, adding an additional 40,000 metric tons of annual capacity, increasing the total annual output to 340,000 metric tons.
Through a series of process enhancement measures, Evonik has further optimized its methionine production line, utilizing the extra steam generated for power generation at the facility.
As one of Evonik's partners on Jurong Island, Linde Group designed, built, and operates a 9-megawatt alkaline electrolysis unit, the largest of its kind installed in Singapore to date. This facility enables Evonik to use green hydrogen in the production of MetAMINO®, demonstrating Evonik's commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental footprints.
Dr. Harald Schwager, Deputy Chairman of Evonik’s Executive Board, stated, "Our collaboration with Linde on the green hydrogen project in Singapore is a testament to Evonik's ongoing commitment to sustainability. We are working closely with our partners to build a more sustainable future together."
Compared to the pre-expansion phase, the carbon footprint of MetAMINO® produced at Evonik's Singapore facility has been reduced by 6% (Scope 1+2+3).
Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Singapore, remarked at the commissioning ceremony of the expanded MetAMINO® production facility, "Evonik's expansion will help address two pressing challenges—climate change and food production—in a sustainable manner. By increasing output while reducing emissions, Evonik is committed to meeting the growing demand for food from a rising global population, while also reducing its carbon footprint. Congratulations to Evonik for paving the way to a more sustainable future."
Evonik set ambitious climate targets in 2023, which have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to align with the goal of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius (WB2C). Gaetano Blanda, Head of Evonik's Animal Nutrition business line, commented, "We are committed to reducing emissions based on the latest climate science. Our long-term vision is to further elevate our targets to ensure global warming is limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050."
Evonik's MetAMINO® is widely used in the livestock industry, providing nutrition to animals in a healthy, efficient, and sustainable way. The Animal Nutrition business line develops a range of products, services, and systematic solutions based on scientific principles, contributing to the provision of healthy, high-quality, and affordable animal protein food for a growing global population. The Animal Nutrition business line is part of the Nutrition & Care division, significantly contributing to the profitable growth of the division.
